Keel laid for research vessel METEOR IV

Rostock/Papenburg, 11.07.2023 –

The construction of the new German research vessel METEOR IV has reached another milestone: with the keel laying at the NEPTUN WERFT shipyard in Rostock, the assembly of the hull began today. The MEYER Group is building the research vessel together with the Lower Saxony shipyard FASSMER on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

"Only two months after the burning start, the assembly of the individual components for the METEOR IV is now beginning. At our shipyards in Rostock and Papenburg, and together with Fassmer Werft, we have an experienced and powerful team working on this groundbreaking research vessel," says Managing Director Thomas Weigend.

Fassmer Werft has great experience in building government and research vessels as well as in cooperating with ministries, while MEYER Group brings its knowledge from the construction of the research vessel Sonne to the project.

The new METEOR IV has a length of about 125 metres and a gross tonnage of about 10,000 GT. On board there is space for 35 scientists and 36 nautical and technical crew members. The METEOR IV is designed for worldwide multifunctional and interdisciplinary research, mainly in the Atlantic. The new vessel will make an important contribution to national and international marine research, especially in the fields of climate and environmental research.

The research vessel METEOR IV is scheduled for delivery in 2026 and will replace the existing METEOR as well as the already decommissioned POSEIDON.
